THE KAIPARA AND WAITEMATA ECHO With which is incorporated "The Kaipara Advertiser & Waitemata Chronicle." Helensville, Thursday, May 20, 1915. THE BLIND INSTITUTE IMPOSTER RUN TO EARTH.

THE above is a laudable Institute the ECHO annually supports, but being suspicious of the last character who came round here collecting subscriptions (after contributing a small sum), we wrote up to the Secretary in Auckland for particulars, receivthe following letter in reply: — THE JUBILEE INSTITUTE FOR THE BLIND ' Auckland, sth May, 1915. Messrs F. Mackenzie and Son, Helensville. Dear Sirs, —I beg to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 3rd inst. in reference to the young man who was collecting money. I regret to say that you and others have been victimised. Our accredited collectors always carry an official authorisation and give receipts on our printed official forms. The impostor was run to earth at Pukekohe on Saturday last, and he has been consigned to gaol for three months with hard labour. Of course, we greatly regret that he was successful in obtaining any donations, though we appreciate the sympathy with our Institute by which the donors were actuated. — lam etc., R, LESLIE, Secretary. We are not aware of the amount of money the rascal got away with, but the above letter goes to show how careful one has to be with generous inclinations when STRANGERS come round soliciting support to the many and various needy objects. We were also " neatly taken in " the other day for the small sum of £3 by a man who represented himself to be in great distress, but that is another story.
