A MOST SUCCESSFUL BENEFIT

The local Hall was gailydecorated with flags on Friday evening, 23rd ult., when a Basket Social was held in aid of the Belgian Fund. Thanks to the kindness of ladies and gentlemen from surrounding districts assist" ing the residents, the Social was a great success. Thirty baskets' were put up for sale, realising the sum of £14, the top price being £2 for a basket knocked down to Mr C. Berger, who received a very hearty round of applause. A basket which" was tastefully decorated in red^. white and blue,. «and sent in bjnA bachelor, was sold and re-febk^ several times till it reached t^e handsome total of £1 15s 6d. Keen interest was taken in the sale and the bidding was^brisk throughout. A good business was also done in button-holes, patriotic flags, books, cigars, soft drinks, etc. Mr F. Elvin successfully carried out the duties of auctioneer.

The thanks of the Committee are due to the following gentlemen : Messrs C. and T. Hooper for providing dance music ; the Hall Committee, for the use of the Hall/; the proprietors of the ECHO, for 100 attractive tickets printed tree of charge; Mr F. Tucker, for cigars, etc., supplied at less than cost price; Mr Phillips, for cordials, dittoMessrs Mather and Smith for donation of £\. Besides all these, there are the ladies, who gave the dainty baskets with ho less dainty contents; and also those who undertook the sale of tickets ; then, last, but not least, comes Mr S. Hadrill, the energetic secretary, who carried out the thankless, but necessary, task of boiling the pots, and afterwards washing up the supper dishes, while others were having a good time.

The Committee has the satisfactory balance of £23 7s to hand over to Mr Burns in aid of the * Belgians.
