Mr I. C. Rimmer, land and commission agent, Helensville, has a notice elsewhere re his absence,
Don't forget the Grand Concert by the Lyric Four, in the Parakai Hall, on 29th inst. A free 'bus will be ruuning.
Meetings of householders for the election of School Committees are announced to be held on Wednesday, April 28, at Helensville, Te Pua, and Woodhill. We beg to draw attention to Messrs Stewart Bros.' illustrated advertisement on our front page, which announces the arrival of new autumn and winter goods. A handy five-roomed house, with every convenience, is advertised for sal© on exceedingly easy terms, by Mr W. Allen, junr., of Dargaville. 'mMt The oyster season is now well on, }3tifa^^ so far none are obtainable in Helensville What a poor place for local enterprise, even on a small scale. Those, who have the right to vote for election of member of the Auckland Harbour Board, for Waitemata County, will do well to select Vincent F. KerrTaylor, of Waimauku. Cock pheasants, Californian quail, grey duck, spoonbill duck, teal, pukeko, and bjack swan may be shot in this district during the coming shooting season. We prefer cock pheasant for a present. Messrs J. C. Rimmer and Percy Monk departed on a journey to the Old Dart this week. The Echo wishes them " good going " all the time. A yelping dog, which has been annoying the neighbours during the past six months (night and day), should be poisoned. The moon is not always shining. The Court-house at Helensville has been appointed a polling place for the election of members of Auckland Harbour Board for this end of Waitemata County, but it is a puzzle to us, so far, as to who in the place has a vote. >, Cabled that General yon der Goltz, the German officer at the head of Turkish military matters, has returned to Constantinople, and handed the Sultan an Iron Cross of the first class.—But where does Allah come iri should'the Sultan wear a cross ? An insult to both. Owing to the increase in the Helensville. school attendance, the new Committee to be elected at the Householders' Meeting, to be held pn. 28th inst., will consist of nine members!* Nomination papers may be obtained from the Chairman, Mr A. Becroft. A letter has been received by the Secretary of the local Athletic Club from the Northern Athletic Union stating that on account of runners giving up training after the Easter meeting, it would be advisable to further postpone the Sports until after the winter, when the Union will favour us with all possible support. The shooting season is fast approaching, and will open from May Ist till July 31st inclusive. Property-owners, who have no love for poachers, will do well to get their notices to trespassers in the,ECHO at once. They are inserted at a cheap rate for the whole season— 12/6.
Town planning and beautifying is a capital idea, and one that should take on at Helensville, where almost every other street is an "avenue." We learn that Mr Daniel Stewart proposes planting rows of trees along Nelson Street and round his corner on towards the bowling green; and that Mr Elliott is also going to plant ornamental trees fronting his property.
In referring in his address at Remuera the other evening to the question of the city's fish supply, Mr J, H, Gimson said thit the question of securing a cheap and adequate supply of fish was one of the greatest importance. Until, however •the present restrictions on trawling were removed, they would not be able to obtain such a supply. The interests of a few Thames fishermen were allowed to stand in the way of the removal of these restrictions, but he claimed that the interests ,of these people should Hot be Placed in front of the interests of the large body of people in the city and to block the carrying out of a much-needed reform.
The late Lord Londonderry once told a good tale of an Irishman in his employ. X was on the everlasting subject of Ire and s wrongs : « We'll not get Home Rule for ould Oireland," said this son of Erin, "till Germany, France, Russia, and America give them bl aygua rds of Englishmen a good bating." -After a pause, he added proudly: " And begorra, t'whole lot of 'em shoved together couldn't do it. Oh, it's the grand Navy we ye got!
The proposal to bridge the Northern Wairoa River at Dargaville is exciting consumable interest, and is m eet£s with SU pp ort from all enterprising residents in the county. The question of mdmdual benefit, of course, arises, as it does in all matters of territorial Progress, but that phase of the question Jrr T' is n°t,lLlyto impede the advancement of the project.
Newcomers to the district (says the Dargavi le "Times") have illustrated to those of lengthy residence that shallow framing on the alluvial flats produces better results than deep draining. The coat in shallow ditching is a mere fraction of the other, and on sL Z a comprehensive scheme of drainage has by -he former been carried out at a nominal cost. A strong point in favour Lt! SiaU,° W W°rk is absence of danger to live stock in being bo-ged in watercourses. ""ogeu
