FACING THE MUSIC.
THE year 1915 is to be the most tremendous year the British Empire has ever faced. It is no time for any admiration of the political skite, the advertising duchess or the garrulous press agent and his actress. It is tims for deeds and men. It is a year during which the ardent flag-wagger may be made to. justify his patriotism by physically helping to push a bayonet; it is a time when the magnificent assortment of selfish cranks may be made to understand that nobody is killed with jaw and no trenches carried in little Bethels by speeches from Brother Chadband. Wars aren't won by prayers, for if the creator gives the fight to the most ardent users of His name, Kaiser William leaves no one in the race. In fact, the people's perspective must change, and the true utility of the professional adviser be gauged by his deeds and not his words. A George Reed might demonstrate his love for Empire much better by doubling round the Pyramid of Cheops sixteeu times than by imploring exceedingly fit men to keep fit. It is very good of us to tell Kitchener how to run a war, but much more serviceable to be a file in Kitchener's army.
