YOUNG SOLDIERS — OLD

THE STATE SAW MILL The report of the engineer was considered at a meeting of the Waitemata County Council on Friday last. The report states that there is a prospect of a State sawmill being erected at Helensville on the site of Coulthard's Mill. " The State has acquired an option on all the surrounding land," says the report, " and they now wish to get an option over the county section." PROPOSED ROAD TO BROOKLYN An old bullock road runs along the bank of the Nihatupu stream, from the Brooklyn bridge to the People's Park, and the Auckland City Council contemplates purchasing the freehold of a strip of land, one chain wide, to include the bullock track road. " Past experience has shown," says*' the report, " that it is not in the best interests of the district for the City Council to hold roads in this way, and I have suggested that it would be far better for all concerned to make the road a public road. The City Council is prepared to do this, provided the County Council undertakes to. give" the City Council the righfc ist have a tramway for seven years, with a promise of renewal for a further seven years. This road will be a great advantage to the county, and I recommend that the road be proclaimed a public road, upon the City Council supplying: the necessary plans, and that the promise re the tramway be given." the' rewiti bridge The decking on this bridge was now about done, and the engineer recommended that the construction of the new bridge in concrete be undertaken at an early date.
