FLASHES

Owing to the small amount of business ensuing, in future Town Board meetings will be held but once every month.

The following bowlers are booked to go up to town on Saturday: Messrs Harris, Graham, Cullens, Rimmer, Hill, Ellett, Constable, and Garry.

Owing to Saturday half-holiday prevailing here a number of local bowlers ai c enabled to run up to town on Saturday next, play in the matches, and return same evening. .

Tau Henare is now strutting round the Bay of lelands as proud as a peacock since the Court, in dealing with the petition to oust him from the Northern Maori seat, "threw out the Bill."

Owing to a printer's error in the paragraph on the send-off to Mr T Mcßae, clerk in the Railway office, the Star Theatre was mentioned as being given for the farewell, instead of the Helensville Theatre.

The hearing of the petition against the election of Mr V. H. Reed, M.P. for Bay of Islands, does not come on for hearing at Kaikohe before 17th April next. There are some rather serious charges contained in the petition.

The Helensville Theatre was fairly well filled on Thursday last to see the pictures, the special occasion being a benefit for the Helensville Rifle Club. Mr Stewart gave the whole of the proceeds (without deductions), which amounted to £6 12s 9d. Other gifts have also been received, amounting to £1 17s, including £1 Is from Mr Bishop, and 10s from Mr Masters.

Tuesday, was Licensing Election Day (where there was a content). No less than 13 candidates were nominated for Bay of Islands Licensing Bench, on which our Editor, Mr F. Mackenzie, sat for 30 years, having been elected every time, bar twice. ,

The Fire Brigade dance, held in the Star Theatre on Tuesday evening, was a success financially, about thirty couples taking the floor, and, with excellent music, everybody enjoyed themselves. Dancing was kept up till midnight. Another social of a similar kind will take place on Monday, 22nd inst.

A large number of natives assembled in the Helensville Court-house on Friday last for the purpose of putting in their claims and giving evidence before Mr T. H. Wilson, President of the Maori Land Board for the Tokerau Maori Land District. The question affected the ownership of the Tuhirangh Block No. 2. Evidence of a number of natives was taken, and, while several claims were satisfactorily dealt with, others were adjourned 'sine die.' ••

The young German, Arthur Rottermann, who was sentenced to death at Wanganui on February 13, for the murder of Joseph McCann, Lucy Mary McCann, and 'John Joseph McCann (an infant), at Ruahine on December 28, was executed in the Terrace Gaol, Wellington, at 8 a.m. on Monday morning last.

It is said " the devil looks after his own." Such appeared to be the case with Mr Percy's horse and trap one day last week, when the spirited animal, which had evidently been on hard feed, bolted from the truck-yard of the Helensville South Railway Station. Going up the slight incline towards McEwin's Hotel, the horse turned to the right, and got on the main road. Several persons near the Police Station saw the rush the mad animal was making on to the footpath and commenced to wave it off. With this, the horse rushed the fence, breaking a thick rail and wires, bolte d through the paddock on the other side, and landed near the trucks again evidently quite satisfied that during his escapade not a hair was turned, nor a bare scratch of paint made on the trap.
