MONDAY
The cables contain an account of a dashing bayonet charge by a Canadian regiment at the front. This is the first news of the Canadians in action, though it was reported some, weeks ago that Princess Patricia's . Regiment had reached the front. Before the onrush of the colonials whose battle-cry was, " For Canada and Old England," the Germans broke and fled. The pursuit was only checked by the enemy's^ artillery. Over a mile of ground was gained. Latest reports of the fighting at Soissons state that the Germans hold villages on the north bank of the Aisne, but are prevented from crossing the river by French artillery, which covers the southern bank. It is semiofficially announced in Paris that three French brigades were engaged in the action, and that their retreat was not molested.
