KAUKAPAKAPA SPORTS
A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING
[by own special reporter]
Last Thursday, 7th inst., was an especial gala rl\v for Kaukapakapa, it bein# the occasion of the annual Athletic Sports, when people foregathered from miles around, Helensvilie itself contrsbuting a very fair number of patrons, who went out in vehicles oi various kinds. The weather was quite pleasant, while the drive was invigorating and interesting, especially to first^tnppers, who were surprised that the journey is comfortably negotiated in one hour. Owing to the paucity of patronage on previous occasions, Messrs Hunter Bros, did not this year run their four-hoise, break. This -may or may not have been a loss to the gates, but whether or not. we do think that in future greater effort should be made to ensure a larger attendance. Indeed there is no rea3on why at least half Helensville should not go out if special train arrangements could be overcome. Whether this experiment has ever been tried or not the writer is in ignorance, . However, If#it go at that, suffice to say that the Kaukapakapa sports ground.^always lent by Mr Drinnati) is an ideal spot, upon a level plateau, beautifully sheltered by trees, and a lovely fresh-water stream running upon one side of it. Mrs Cantell ran a most welcome tenij erance booth upon xhe date in question, and hot water being available several picnic parties made their own afternoon tea. Mr F. Dye (president) and a number of other. officials, including the Messrs Drinnan, Shanks, Dormer, Mumfoid, and many others, were early,on the ground, and amongst the patrons we noticed the Bey. Lamond (Methodist), who all day took much interest in the sports and made himself generally popular. The secretary (Mr A. Shanks), who conducted the proceedings for the first time, deserves credit, and with hia associates, Judge E. Kinlock, Starter H. Uormer, aud ihe Committee, the bnccess of the gathering mainly rests. All the events as published, excepting the Potato Ruce on horseback, c-iune off, most of them well contested, and no dissatisfaction appeared to exist with the handicapping by Messrs G. Shanks, H. Mumford and F. Dormer, The following is the result of the events: Maiden Handicap of v 100 yds. Firot 20s, second 7s 6d.
