The British warships which bombarded Zeebrugge destroyed sections of German submarines and immense quantities of stores. The situation in the western theatre is unchanged. Fighting continues under winter conditions in Flanders. Some ground has been gained by the allies in the Argonne. The Germans admit 200,000 casualties in the battle of the Yser. The Sultan's proclamation of a holy war has failed of its purpose in Central Asia Minor. The loyalty of India is vouched for by the Maharajah of Idar, who is on his way to the front, and declares that Turkey has no claim to represent Mahommedanism. An official report from Petro" grd states that the battle of Lodz continues. Russian cavalry inflicted heavy losses on the retreating Germans. In the south-west of Poland, along the Czenstochowa-Cracow line, the Russians are also reported to have been successful. A combined land and sea attack on the German positions at Nieuport, on the Belgian coast, was made by the allies. A Franco-British squadron participated, and destroyed two German batteries at Westende. A destroyer was seriously damaged.
