STUCK UP!
BY THE MAN IN THE
STREET
'Morning, Mr Editor. 'Morning to you. : How is it you are not down at the Railway Station getting the the tally ? In. a fog and do not understand what you mean. Well, you ought to know then. I have been down to the Station to see how many people came up to the annual opening of the sports grounds at the Hot Springs. Yes, and ? Not a member of the new Board, nor its chairman, was present to meet the visitors. And how many came up ? Not a solitary! Then it was wise of the Board members not to lose their time. That's not the point. When "*' the two former openings took- ~ place, the old chairman of the Board managed to get some eighty visitors down from Auckland. We had a man specially appointed to go round and hunt up those who had been invited--about 150—members of Pariia.-*^^ ment and others, including prominent citizens, and for the last two years -I tell you, we had 80 visitors at each opening. How do you account for tßieir absence this year ? Easy ! It's my opinion no one from Auckland was invited. That may be so, or it may not. , What is the result ? Why, a big advertisement for j the place has been lost. If you "i want to run a business success- ■: fully you must keep it before the j public. That is so. ' . . j Yes. Why, last year we .J arranged with the hotels nearest the Springs to put up the visitors free. And we entertained them and all who came along from the town, with refreshments and tea, : and Mrs Cuckey and others came out to help cut up the sandwiches, etc., and not one penny did it cost the Board for expenses. j Then who paid ? Why, the public, of course. Thefold Chairman and others went round for subscriptions, mk_ settlers about the Springs g;a^' freely in provisions," time, and trouble. Things have evidently changed since then. Changed! That is no name for it. Things have gone cronk for the want of , but_r»ever-~-~» mind. Good-day. Mind the door-step. j
