SATURDAY, OCTOBER 3, 1914 PRESENT Messrs E. T. Field (chairman), Jas. Stewart, A. Becroft, J. A. Wilson, T. Elliott, J. Lambert, Captain Sellars, and the clerk (H. W. Stringer). MINUTES The minutes of the previous business meeting and Saturday's special meeting were read and confirmed. SUBSCRIPTION LISTS Proposed by Mr Becroft and seconded by Mr Lambert —That a subscription list be opened foi the Huntly mining disaster, the mover to take charge of same. — Carried, Proposed by the Chairman and seconded by Mr Jas. Stewart— I That a list be opened for the Belgium relief, and Captain Sellars to take charge of same. — Carried. ADVERTISING HOARDINGS A letter was read from B. E. Williams' Picture Co., applying for permission to erect a hoarding near the bridge and Megson's store. It was proposed by Mr Jas. Stewart and seconded by Mr Elliott —That the permission be opposed, as it was unsightly to the township, and that the railway department did not approve of such advertising.—Carried. Mr Becroft thought that if a suitable hoarding were erected by the Town Board and let for advertising purposes it would bring in a revenue. Mr Lambert was of the same opinion. However, the matter dropped at that. ROADING MATTERS A letter was received from Mr D. Stewart, asking to have Nelson Street from Garfleld Road and Awaroa Street to the river, dedicated. Mr Elliott proposed and Mr Becroft seconded — That the members of the Board inspect the roads after the next meeting.— Carried. Mr Elliott's name was then added to the Roads Committee. CEMETERY CONTROL Mr Becroft wanted to known what position he was in with regard to the local cemetery, as he was not" on the roads committee, and he did not want to be over-ridden on the question. He had done a lot of work, such as pegging off, etc. Proposed by Mr Stewart and seconded by Capt. Seliars—That applications be > called for the position of sexton, for the local cemetery, at so much per grave. —Carried. Proposed by Mr Stewart and seconded by Mr La mbert—That Mr H. M. Wilson be asked to survey and peg off a portion of the cemetery.—Carried. Mr Stewart proposed and Mr Becroft seconded—That no lots be sold on left hand side of the road. —Carried. FIRE BRIGADE Applications for the local volunteer fire brigade, from Robinson Bros., and three others, were accepted. Proposed by Mr Elliott and seconded by Mr Lambert—That the five applicants be constituted a brigade, with power to add to their number. —Carried. Proposed by Mr J. Stewart and seconded by Mr J. Wilson—That the selection of a site for the station be left to the water and drajqage, Qornrnittee,—Carried. Proposed by the Chairman, seconded by Mr Wilson-^That Mr B. J. Robinson be appointed in charge of the brigade,— Carried, THE BYE-LAWS Proposed by Mr Bearqi't and seconded by Mr Lambert-^That the whole Board meet as a committee on Tuesday night to discuss the new bye-la^ys; meanwhile metmher-is to hav§ aqcess of sa,me,-^Oarri§d. WATER AND DRAINAGE) Mr Lambert proposed and Capt Sellars seconded —That the water and drainage committee report on what roads require the water and drainage system, and report progress at next meeting.— Qarrjed. persons who have not watermains passing by their properties be supplied with water free of charge if tanks are brought to the mains. Mr J. Stewart said he thought that all persons who have water branches available, and are not using them, should be charged at the rate of 2/6 per gallon. Proposition carried. THE LOCAL CONSTABLE. Mr Stewart mentioned the fact that a petition had been forwarded to the authorities, asking dx>r the removal of Const. Driscoll, and stating that an enquiry had been made. What a shame! exclaimed several members. The Chairman then stated that he was glad Mr Stewart had brought the matter forward, and he" then moved the following resolution: That it is the unanimous opinion of this Board that it would be contrary to the interests of this district to remove Constable Driscoll, and that this Board place on record its appreciation of him as an honest, impartial and capable officer, and requests the Department not to entertain the proposal to remove him. Two or three members rose at once to second this proposal, when it was then put and carried with one dissentient. FINANCE Accounts to the amount of £18 15s, also drainage account of £25 ss, were passed for payment.
