MANURING TESTS.
A test applied to one of the poorest fields on Mr. J. E. Cox's farm at Bilton, Warwickshire, England, to ascertain the value of basic slag and kainit and different kinds of lime on the hay crop, has given a striking example of the beneficial effect of basic slag on poor grass land. The dressings were applied in January, 1911, but the crops in that year were so light, owing to the drought, that they were not weighed. On the 13th of July last however, the grass was cut and weighed from an equal area on each of the plots, when it was found that the dressing of (5 2-3 cwt. of basic slag per acre had resulted in a 1 yield of 43.6 cwt. of hay per acre, or a gain of £2 9s. 3d per acre over the untreated plot, which gave only 19.1 cwt. of hay of the value of £.2 7s. 9d. Basic slag and kai- | nit together resulted in a gain of I£l l-4s. 6d. per acre, and super ] alone gave a gain over the untreated plot of 10s. 7sd. per acre; but kainit and ground lime together resulted in a comparative loss of j £1 3s. per acre. Refuse lime, local ! lime and ground lime each used ! alone, also resulted in loss. The experiments are to be continued for a number of years, and their interest and value will increase from season to season. 14A2.
