A Gate Latch.

The enclosed illustration shows a simple gate latch. The movable part is made of oak about 2in. wide, • and 2Jin. deep, with the edges rounded and a slot cut in about 3in. to allow of the catch moving back. The piece of iron can be fin. by iin. or Ik.

by £in., with one end sharpened to drive up into the top rail, and the outer end thinned down for nails , |or screws, or a small bolt and just a small set off to bring it over the centre of the rail. This catch is very simple and^very durable. The one I am describing has been in use well over fifty years. The small piece of chain is fixed with two staples, and is perfect in action. This catch could be made in iron, but I should prefer it in wood. J When fixing, allow a little more | room in the top part of the mor- ' tice in the head of the gate, to allow of a. slight rise in the latch when pulled back.
