GERMAN PUDDING. ' Take half a pound of treacle, half ; a pound of flour, a quarter of a pound of suet, one teaspoonful of carbonate of soda, also one ounce of candied peel, and a quarter of a pint of milk. Mix milk and treacle together. Put suet, flour, soda, and peel in a basin and rub together until dry. Pour the treacle and milk in and three-parts : fill a basin with the mixture. : Steam the pudding for three hours. i ' Serve with cream or hot treacle or j • with sweet white sauce. j A VEGETARIAN DISH. L An appetising vegetarian dish is , made as follows : —Take one pound •of onions, three ounces of cheese, half a pint of milk, one ounce of ,' butter, half a teaspoonful of salt and a pinch of pepper. Peel and cut the onions in small pieces, then ' boil them in just enough water to cover. When tender add the cheese rat into small pieces, boil for five minutes, then add milk and but- ; ter, and bring the whole just to ; boiling point, but on no account let the mixture boil. Add seasoning to taste and serve with dry toast. Never let a birdcage hang in a room, where the gas is alight, unless it is exceptionally well-venti-lated. The air near the ceiling is always the most inpure at night. Set the cage on the table, or, better still, on the floor (presuming you have no cat), and you will find the bird's health improve.
