THE KAIPARA AND WAITEMATA ECHO WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED "THE KAIPARA ADVERTISER & WAITEMATA CHRONICLE." HELENSVILLE, FRIDAY, AUGUST 14, 1914 THE SUDDEN CHANGE

IT is scarcely conceivable that owing to England being suddenlyinvolved in a most serious war, many happy homes and hearts have been made, but it is a fact, nevertheless. Let us see how this startling announcement has come about.

As Britishers, Englishmen, Irishmen, Scotchmen, and Welshmen, scattered far-and wide over the earth, bury the hatchet when the Mother Country is involved in war, especially one similar to that now raging, involving much at stake, honour, pride and glory, and become one immense brotherhood, putting aside all politics of a controversal nature, which breed ill-feeling and contempt such as customary in the various Dominions and the Home Land, and each cordially shake the hand heartily that was bitterly antagonistic yesterday.

Home Rulers and Ulster Unionists who were ready a short week ago to cut each others' throats if they did not have their way of thinking, are now for the time being on most friendly terms with one another, and ready to stand side by side and sacrifice their last drop of blood for King and Empire !

While the "Boys in Blue." wno had a set-to perhaps not long ago,are now as one at the big guns with a cutlass by their side. Brothers all and one in Unity.

Again,, the dreaded Suffragettes have ceased to hack historical and valuable pictures, to destroy mansions by fire and bomb, and further disgracing womanhood, and have gone to their homes, perhaps to think of the bloody field of battle and loved ones dying or in hospital, and help all they can as did their great and ever-to-be-remembered sister, Florence Nightingale.

Even strikers have gone to work, and shelved their grievances so that.trade shall not be paralized or commerce jeopardized.

In the Dominions, Premiers and Parliamentarians on both sides of the House are "up in arms," and relegating important controversal politics to some more opportune time, whilst out here Prohibitionists, 'the Trade, Bible in Schools, and other momentous questions of the day are laid aside 'sine die.'

The National feeling stands uppermost before the world, with offers of help in money, clothing, horses, and other well-timed assistance. Canada being the most populous and wealthy Dominion, has lavishly offered men and ships just in the time of need. Of course this article could be considerably extended, but as we believe in that good old maxim regarding brevity being the soul of wit, we must conclude by wishing bad luck to Germany (the prime culprit for the war) and God bless our King and Nation !
