MR COATES AND FISHING INDUSTRY
THE question of Mr Gordon Coates, M.P. for Kaipara, asked by him in the House, regarding advancee to fishermen, drew forth the following criticism from the N.Z. Times : " The Member for Kaipara's question, which is virtually a request that the fisher folk of this country may be admitted to the privileges of the advances-to-settlers system, is far-reaching. The expert from Canada has not yet made his report, but there is reason for believing that he was much im-
pressed with • the evidences of marine wealth he has seen. It is possible, indeed probable, that there is life enough in our waters for the support and development of large fisheries. Now this country is manifestly destined to be a maritime country. A wide commerce and a strong fleet to guard it will be the features of a future day. We shall want sailors, and what better nursery for sailors than a great fishery well developed ? The advances system may, one day, in the manner indicated by the Member for Kaipara, play a greater part even than its framers intended."
