State-owned Railways.
Interesting information regarding State-owned railways is given in a return published by the .Board of Trade recently in England. Canada had 26,278 miles of pri-vately-owned, and operated lines in 1911, against 2,018 miles Stateowned and operated and 102 miles owned by the State and privately I operated. Australia hud 16,079 ; miles State ownerl and 1,934 privately owned; South Africa, .7,548 miles State owned and 54") privately owned ; New Zealand, 2,503 miles State owned and ninety-nine privately owned ; and Newfoundland 723 miles State owned but privately operated, and forty-seven privately owned. ! India had 32,880 miles of railways, of which (>,871 were State owned and operated, 18.2 15 State owned but privately operated, 1,6(52 owned and operated by native States, and 1,6 IS owned by native States and worked by companies. "in seventeen other British Colonies and Protectorates there were 8,525 miles of railways privately owned. Forty-two foreign States are covered by the return. In thirty-two of these the railways are owned, cither wholly or in part, by the Governments. The United States is not covered by the return, but it is stated that the country has 219,902 miles of railway in question, all privately owned and operated. The returns show a total of 174,----917 miles of lines owned and operated by Governments, and 424,232 miles owned and operated by private enterprise.—"Daily Express."
