LOCAL BUTTER FACTORY.

SUCCESSFUL ANNUAL MEETING.

THE annual meeting of the Kaipara Co-operative Dairy Company was held in the Star Theatre, on Thursday, 16th inst., when about 100 members were present and took keen interest in the proceedings.

The minutes o"f the previous meeting were read and confirmed

Mr C. Thompson (chairman), proposed that the report and balance sheet as read be adopted. Mr Jas. McLeod seconded this after which some discussion ensued.

Mr N. W. Rimmer wanted to know why the wages were so much bigger than last year.

Mr. A. J. Garry, manager, explained that during the first year the employees had to work very long hours, and as a consequence they had to employ this year more labour, hence the increase.

Mr Rimmer also wanted to know if the clerical work required assistance. The reply was that it was absolutely necessary.

Balance sheet and report were adopted.

Some discussion then took place as to the bonus to be paid to the winter suppliers.

Mr J. P. Hand proposed and Mr Green seconded, —That the bonus of Y^A and l^d be paid; also, a dividend of 5 per cent on the paid-up capital be paid.—This was carried.

Mr McKenzie moved and Mr Peterson seconded —That the directors be paid 10s per day and travelling expenses whilst employed on the company's business

An amendment was proposed by Mr Green, seconded by Mr Stephen—That the directors be paid as last year. —WithdrawnMotion carried.

Mr McKenzie gave Notice of Motion for next annual meeting —That the directors be paid 10s a day and travelling expenses whilst employed on the company's business, and that the same be added to the rules.

Mr McLeod informed the meeting that any Notice of Motion forwarded to the Secretary in time for the report and balance sheet would be in order.

The retiring directors, Messrs G. Glover, G. Ogle, and J. H. Sidell were re-elected.

Mr Henry White, jun., was reelected auditor at a fee of £15 15s.

Mr Garry, manager, reported re cream grading, and gave the various reasons why cream was badly flavoured and what means should be taken to prevent these causes. Mr Garry stated the cream from newly-calved cows should not be used for one week after calving.

Mr Elvin contended that in some cases it could be used earlier ; all depended on the cow.

Mr Garry suggested that a man should be put on' to inspect the different herds, but that such a man wh,o could be depended on could not be secured under £300 per annum.

A shareholder suggested that the grading of cream would cause suppliers to do away with several of the causes mentioned.

Mr Prendergast suggested a cow-testing association, and that an inspector be employed, the Government granting a subsidy of £50.

The Chairman explained the necessity of grading, and stated that the biggest opposition that had to be faced on the London market was margarine.

The Chairman then asked for a show of hands re the grading of cream on the lines based on the copy of the agreement circulated, as he considered it a matter that should be voiced by the meeting. This proposition was unanimously carried, without one dissent.

Mr Gubb moved a vote of thanks to the staff.

Mr McKenzie suggested that a vote of thanks should in the first place be given to the directors, seconded by Mr. McCarthy and carried.

Mr Gubb's motion was then brought on and carried.

Mr Garry replied on behalf of the staff,,thanking the shareholders for their " vote of thanks."

Thus ended a most happy meeting. • ■ .
