■ [ADVERTISEMENT] bTbYeTn statTschools league of newzealand «- AYIIA.T IS THE miJLE I.V STATE SCHOOLS LEAGUE V The League is a Union entered into by the Ohurcli of England, 41. per cent ; Presbyterian Church, 23 per cent; Methodist Church, 9 per cent; aad the Salvation Army, I per cent-; in all 74 per cent of the population. In addition, many Baptists, Congre gationalists, Lutherans, and members of the Church of Christ are members of the League. WHAT IS THE OBJECT OF THE LEAGUE ? To resto.e to the National system of education the Bible and its teaching by a method (known as the Australian system) which has existed in New South Wales since 1866, in Tasmania since 1868, in West Australia since 189-5, in Norfolk Islaud since 1906, and in Queensland since 1910; and which in those States has proved a bulwark of the National System, safeguarding it against, any attempt to destroy it in favoar of denominational education. The fact of its permanance in two States for nearly half a century and since its introduction in adjoining States is proof that it gives fratiefaction to the vast majority of tho people. WHAT IS THE LEAGUE'S PERSONAL ? li Lessons read in school hours by the children themselves from Scripture books provided by the Education Department; State school teachers supervising the leading, but not giving sectarian or dogmatic teaching. Visits during school hours by ministers or accredited teachers from the Churches, instructing the ch-Wreu in the faith of their fnt-h"rs. Conscience clause by which the parent has complete control of the child's religious instruction iv the public school." The league is not asking for every detail of the system, but for the Principle that every child shall have the right to read the Bible and have the opportunity of Definite Religious Teaching by his own Church, both in school hours, the parent —not the teacher or Church-—to decide howmuch, if any, religious instruction the child shall have. As the details :d applying this principle vary in the Australian States, so they can be varied in New Zealand to fit local conditions. WHY IS X REFERENDUM SOUGHT? Because in a referendum everj opponont will have an equal opportunity with supporters of a direct vote. The subject is one which is of immediate concern to every j areut, and of hardly less concern to eveiy voter. It is a question which can be settled best by inasmuch as members of Parliament would be affected by a number of other issues having no concern with the question of religious instruction. Direct settlement at the ballot box of this question allows it to be decided on its own n.ents without any other question becoming involved. The precedents of the settlement of the question, by are nu-neious ; Switzerland (the home of the EefpiPudum), South Australia, Yicturiri aud Queensland having regarded it as the most suitable way of ascertaining the will of the people on the matter. The question, Bible or no Bible, leligious instruction or no religious instruction, is distinct from political and party issues. why should i support the league's proposal ? Because the Churches representing the vast majority of the people have come to an agreement in the common interests of the children, and a great proportion of the electors have endorsed the action of those Churches by signing individually their agreement with the pronosal. Plainly therefore, the League's proposal is the only one likely to ba acceptable to the majority of the people of the Dominion. WHY SHOULD THE HE JSE RELigiOUS INSTRUCTION IN STATE SCHOOLS ? Because educatiqn is not complete which do bs not make provision for the teaching of morality, and morality cannot be taught without a religious foundation, The religious foundation for a Christian country is found in the Bible. WHY SHOULD THE STATE SCHOOL SYSTEM INCLUDE RELIGIOUS TEACHING There is no more reason why the State should exclude Bible lessons and Ministers' visits from the State Schools than from our Industrial Schools, out hospitals and gut prisons, where the State allows religious instruction tq be given. T-ae State recognises the Christian religion in fiverv important phase of ifcs life from the King and the Governor, down through Parliament, with the Judge •, in the making of laws, in the celebration of marriage, in the Defence, Force, and in the gaols—it is excluded from the primary schools only.AVILL THE JjlliLE liE AX INNOVATION TIN* TJIE SCHOOLS 'i Nut sq, It had its place in the provincial systems of education up to 1877.
