An Unusual Brake.

For use in the mountainous parts of Switzerland, a car has been developed iv which the usual brakes are supplemented by a large fan brake placed beneath and parallel to the chassis. When descending heavy gradients, the fan is placed in motion, thus causing a large displacement of air and materially retarding the car, while at the same tiwie the draught .serves to prevent overheating of the rear wheel brakes and of the differential mechanism. The fan is so arranged that it can be driven through any one of the four speeds obtainable when the gear set, and the blades are adjustable to provide greater or less retardation according to the steepness of the grades negotiated.
