ANOTHER COMMISSION

The Canal Commission arrived at Helensville on the 6th inst., the members of which, being Messrs Ferguson (Chairman), Parry, Watson, and the Secretary. The Commission was accompanied by Mr Hamer, Harbour Board Engineer, and his assistant. . Mr James McLeod and Mr J. A. Wilson, representing the Helensville Town Board, journeyed to Kumeu with the party, leaving Helensville by the 12.30 p.m. train. From Kumeu they drove across to Kiverhead. Mr Hamer has lately been taking the levels from Riverhead to Helensville and so far is of opinion that the canal should cross at the source of the Waltemata River (Lamb's old dam), across the Spur into Kumeu, a distance of three-quarters of a mile from water to water. The Commission and party also viewed the route of the proposed canal surveyed in 1863. In the new proposal the cut would be much deeper, but the distance would be only one-third of the old proposal.
