In a few months hence these broad acres will bo a picture and a splendid breathing place in the heart of the town. A capital concrete water-trough was put into position opposite the Kaipara Hotel on Wednesday, quite a crowd of persons being in attendance looking on at the proceedings. "Let thy cattle drink and drink ye also," but the horses were quite shy, and refused to libate when we left. At a largely attended meeting of settlers, held at Ohaeawai last week, it was unanimously decided that Bay of Islands should form a freezing company for the district, as Whangarei was quite unsuitable and inconvenient for the Bay, Hokianga, etc. A strong committee was appointed to report progress later

Sir T. Lipton's challenging Shamrock will be launched on May 26, and will have a trial on the Solvent on June 1. She is described as being the most wonderful boat of her kind ever built, is of original design, and will have several novel features.

The annual Masonic ball, under the auspices of Lodge Star of the North, 1647, E.C., will be held on June Bth, in the Town Hall. A strong committee of Masons has been appointed to carry out details. The Masonic ball this year promises to be one of the most successful functions of the season, as it always is in Whangarei.

A correspondent of a Manawatu paper writes as follows: "'Tour tale about the strange way a fish was caught—hanging on a horse's lip after the horse had been drinking from a creek —is not as queer as the catch made at an Eketahuna creamery. It was a cockerbully, 'all alive oh,' swimming in the big milk' vat!"

Mr Gordon Coates, M.P., has just returned from a trip through the backblocks of the Mangakahia district, where he met many electors of both his own constituency and of the Bay of Islands. In some of the places he reached, the settlers declared that he was the first Member of Parliament who had ever visited their neighbourhood.— Dargaville " Times."

A presentation of a silver-mounted pipe and tobacco pouqji was made to Mr H. V 7. Stringer on Saturday last, by the Helensville Regatta Club. The presentation was made by Mr F. Tucker, 071 behalf of the Club, who stated that it was a slight recognition of Mr Stringer's services as honorary auditor, and wished the recipient a successful smoke. Mr Stringer replied that what little he had done was a labour of love, and that if he could do anything in the future for the welfare of the Club 113 would le pleased to do it,
