Benzol as a "Corrector" of Fuels.
Great as is the attention that has been directed towards benzol as an alternative fuel for gasolene, engineers would seem to haye1 overlooked the fact that it Is a corrector of the heavier distillates, in general use. There is no donbti that the coal-tar product really fej most valuable. It has given *j great deal of satisfaction alone, it: is true, but its continued use results in comparatively heavy deposits. Combining benzol with kerosene, on the other hand, improves both fuels, for it has been demonstrated by experiment that where only mediocre results can be obtained with kerosene alone, the addition of from 10 to 50 per cent, of benzol materially improves both the efficiency and the economy of the engine. A possible explanation of the fact might be found in the greater volatility of the benzol, which thus assists in the vaporisation of the heavier oil, which in turn burns more cleanly, due to the greater portion of carbon introduced by the benzol.
