Belgium has an umbrella lending society. The subscription is but five francs a year. Each member, on paying his subscription, receives an aluminium counter stamped with a number. When caught by the rain, all that a subscriber has to do is merely to go to the nearest restaurant, tobacco shop, or big store, anil, in exchange for his aluminium ticket he is immediately given a sound umbrella. As soon as the rain ceases he deposits the umbrella in a similar establishment, and receives another counter. Sydney and Melbourne might probably find such a society as advantageous a s Brussels. .
