At a trial in court when the wit-' I ness in the box was being subjected* ,to a merciless cross-examination, in | answering one question the witness^ I nodded. Whereupon the court steno-j grapher, who was crowding the limitf ,to get it all and could not see' the witness, at once demanded:: . "An-swer that question," to which* the witness replied :— "1 did. answ«r \t ;. I nodded myj head." 1 The .stenographer, without a moment's hesitation, came right backwith, "Well, I heard it rattle, but; could not tell whether it was up and! , down or from side to side." \ ! ~~~ : An Englishman, who was spend-' ing his summer holidays in America'! last year, happening to take up a- , book on geography "for the use ofschools," saw the following question! ; and answer :— ! "Where is I>ondon ?'£ i "It is the chief town of a smallisland off the coast of France." When black kid gloves become rusty at the finger-ends they may be re-' stored by adding a few drops o4 black ink to a teaspoonful of olive-oil and applying it with a camels-hair brush.
