While he was in the north recently (says the Dominion) the Hon. H. D. Bell journeyed to Kaipara in the Government steamer Hinemoa in order to inspect a proposed bird sanctuary, an area situated some little way inland from Kaipara Harbour, and containing several fresh-water lakes lying- amongst sand dunes, but encircled by vegetation. These lakes are a favoured haunt of swan's and ducks. White residents in the district and the Maoris who live adjacent alike favour the sanctuary proposal, but an obstacle exists, in fact, that the land about the lakes is private property, owned by a local settler, who also holds some rights over the lakes themselves. The Minister on his visit conferred with the European and Maori residents, and also with the member for the district (Mr J. G. Coates), arid he will submit a proposal to, Cabinet i in regard to the ?,u.gge,stea sanctuary. ' i
