DANGEROUS SHUNTING AT HELENSVILLE

KILL SOMEONE YET

At the last meeting of the Otamatea County Council, Cr. Smith said he had a matter he would like to bring under the notice of the council. He was returning home from Auckland last week, and in reaching Helensville he was on his way to the steamer and an accident very nearly happened through what appeared to be careless shunting. Women and children were hurrying to the steamer when a van was shunted to the shed, and the clamping on of the brakes made such a thundering noise that it startled everyone and went very nigh to running over someone. He could not see the guard, but he heard the driver address an office boy : " Why in a capital H don't you keep the people off the line, there'll be an accident here yet." He thought council should protest against such dangerous practices oir the part of the railway. The council decided to make representations to the Railway Department.
