THE Kaipara Advertiser. AND WAITEMATA CHRONICLE. WEDNESDAY, JAN. 28, 1914. THOSE WICKED MANTRAPS.
It appears to be a gross peculiarity with the engineers who lay out our railways, to give every town through which a line passes, its own special and cursed railway crossing— or it may have two for that matter —Helensville can boast of b.ut one; there is no accounting for taste. Almost every other clay we read in the morning papers of a person being killed at some one or other of the numerous' level crossings in the Colony, and during the last few days two fatal accidents have been recorded ; i.e., " Man killed at Wanganui railway crossing when attempting to drive a dray across the line." " Thos Johnston, 40 years of age, who had a wife an England, was killed at a level crossing at Carterton." In most instances where these accidents occur, the crossing is round a bend where it is impossible to " look out for the engine," and the warning whistle of its approach is given too late, in several cases we know of Government are doing away with some of the most dangerous crossings—after killing a man or two — we suppose Helensville, when a wretched and fatal accident does occur, will receive at coroner's inquest some attention. Granted that innumerable narrow escapes have taken place goes without saying, ihe most danger is apparent 'when vehicles are going down the hill and on to the crossing herein referred to.
