THE Kaipara Advertiser, AND WAITEMATA CHRONICLE. WEDNESDAY, NOV. 19 1913. DANGEROUS CROSSINGS.

The Town Board is again urging that tho dangerous level crossing at Helensville South be bridged as early as possible. Representations have been made repeatedly to the same end, but without avail. It is quite evident, however, that the Hon. Miuibter for Railways is of the opinion that these level crossings should be bridged, instance his attempt to get local bodies to do the work. But this is merely baulking the question. Local authorities, although certainly interested in securing the public safety, have no say in railway matters, and cannot reasonably bo asked to spend their funds on improving the railway system There would have been an overhead crossing- at Helensville long ago had tlie local authorties been willing to find tho finance required. The crossing in question is admitted to be one of the most dangerous on the railways, and in the interests .of public safety the Railway Department should see to the only obvious remedy being introduced as early as possible. Eatal accidents have been narrowly averted at this particular spot —but perhaps fatal accidents are needed before the Department sees fit to take action.
