Grand Bazaar.

The Grand Bazaar and Sale of Work arranged under the auspices of St Matthew's Ladies' Guild took place last Saturday in the Foresters' Hall and passed off very successfully.. For some months past the Guild members have been busily engaged in preparing for this effort, the funds for which were to reduce the debt on the Parsonage. The culmination of their labors was seen on Saturday by the splendid array of needlework and fancy goods displayed for sale, nearly all of which found ready purchases at satisfactory prices. The various stalls were well arranged and the articles displayed very advantageously by the stallholders in charge. A large Christmas tree in the centre of the hall, which was a great attraction to the young people, took up rather too much room and caused the aisles to be unnecessarily crowded, particularly in the evening. In addition to the many bargains offered at the stalls, there were various other attractions such as competitions, shooting gallery, etc ; whilst the strawberry and cream department and tea rooms proved very popular.

The Bazaar was opened by Mrs. Calder, wife of Archdeacon Calder, of Auckland, who congratulated the Guild members on their enterprise and wished them every success. There was a good attendance of visitors throughout the afternoon and evening, and the Bazaar promoters were very pleased with the success met with, to which the favorable weather conditions doubtless largely .contributed.

The total receipts came to about £85, which for a one day Bazaar must be considered fairly good.

Following are the results of competitions : cake-guessing, Mrs Cucksey, W. Constable and Miss Brown ; pea-guessing, J. Geldard Jnr.; ham, J. Harris ; sheep, E. Constable ; doll-guessing, Mrs R. Ferrall won both ; lamb, F. Burt, W. Reylands and T. Hafford.

Of the Bazaar workers Mrs H. W. Stringer was secretary; in charge of the Plain work stall were Mesdames J. Lambert Jnr. and H. W. Stringer ; sweets stall, Mrs J. Newman and Miss Stewart; Flower stall, Mrs R. J. Walters, Misses W. and Nita McLeod and Mr Hopmeiyer; Xmas tree, Misses Becroft ; Bran tub, Mrs and Miss ** Woodhouse ; Icecream stall, Misses L. Thompson, J. Caundle and D. Masters; Refreshments, Mesdames J. Vercoe, H. White, C. Newman, Watson, Jiles and H. Thompson, Misses Vercoe and M. Plimley; Produce stall, Messrs H. W. Stringer and J. Newman ; Shooting gallery, Mr A. J. Hill ; Doors, Messrs A. J. Hill, H. White and S. Olive,

At the close of the Bazaar, on the motion of Rev. C. I. Merton, a hearty vote of thanks was tendered to all those who had assisted with the Bazaar, and to those who had donated goods. He commented on the hearty manner in which all had co-operated to bring about the success met with.
