A Peculiar Position.

At the Town Board meeting 0 Saturday a letter from Stewart Bros in reply-to a letter from the Boarc stated that their new buildings did nc encroach on the Grarfield road. The Foresters' Lodge replied to letter from the Board to the eftect ths the section where the hall now stoo was surveyed 30 years ago by a « gistered surveyor. Within the las six months the property had bee surveyed by another registered survej or and the latter strcuk the same peg as the previous one; and it was cor sidered they were within their bound and not encroaching on Grarfield roa as suggested by the Board. The Chairman said he had been ir formed that the Foresters' hall was t come out on the road another six fee Mr Becroft said the building w&s i come to the boundaiy. The Chairman said as far as th Board knew on the present road thei wolud be an encroachment of six. f«e Mr Becroft denied that it was ir tended to encroach on the road an said he wbuld not endorse the Chaii man's action in the matter because 1 used those terms. The Board coul not prove that they were coming out 0 the road. The Chairman : I claim that it wi be an encroachment on the road an we can stop this being done. By gi> ing notice in the matter if anytbin turns up our position is then a good on* Mr Becroft: That is only your ide of it. The Chairman said he recently sa1 the Commissioner of Lands in the D< partment's office and he asked for th report of the man who was sent up t check the survey some time ago bi was told there was no report then He explained about the encroachmer on the street, and was advised to sen the notices re same which ho had don( Mr Beeroft considered the Lands D( partment were going beyond thei bounds. Mr Stewart said that himself an - Capr. Hammond went to the Depart ment's office two years ago and sai Mr Wheeler's report and the plar And they were informed that Mr M Leod had been along and had promise^ to call again with an old plan of He] ensville, but had not done so. The Chairman said he had no promised the Department a plan. A] that he had now done was his duty a Chairman of the Board. Mr Becroft said he would admit ther was something ladically wrong aboil tho affair. Chairman : I know there is. Mr Stewart said Mr Wheeler wa Inspecting Surveyor jbr the Depart ment and his repoi t was in the office The Chairman said Mr Wheele told him that the line was wrong, an< that a way out of the difficulty was t< get land from the people on the oppos ite side to make it right. Mrßejroft said both sides seeme< to be wiong. Mr Wilson suggested that land ma; be go£ on the bank side to put mat ters right.
