On the Farm.
Exporimeutal plots at the Mouma" haki Siate Farm were sown with various kinds of tedder lucerne in November H» 11. Tho record of the yields is : Colonial, 33.2-1 tons per acre ; French, 20.9-1 : Hunter River, 32.82 ; Hungarian, 25.80 ; American, 22.7-i ; Turkestan, 17 70 ; Peruvian, 22.17 ; and Arabian, 19.77. The opinion which Mr W. Perry, of Masterton, has formed, after seeing runny sheep farms and stock shows in the Old Country during the past few months, is that we in New Zealand have not much to learn in the way of sheep-bi ceding and management, although tho English method of housing and feeding rams is very successful. The sheep manage to lay on a e^reat deal ol flesh, but the overfeedingl often results in impairing the diseaseresisting powers of the sheep; consequently show sheep frequently give their purchasers little satisfaction. Sheep worrying - is rampart in the Manawatu district A Fitzlierbert farmer lost seven bree.diugewes'one night recently all bearing evidence of having'been worried by dogs, while many more sheep were bally bitten. On another farm three ewes and lamb.- were killed on the same night (saj's the Standard). The Department of Agriculture has und'H' consideration the question of reducing the quarantine charges on imported live stock. uvA of shortening the period of quarantine, as far as this course can saWy be adopted. This announcement is made bv the Department by way of reply *to a Farmers' Union remit. It is further stated that the Department hopes to issue shortly consolidated regulations governing the importation ot stock and the reduction?,'if decided upon, will bo notified in these. In regard .to the ; reduction >•[ freight, this matter has lv en receiving the attention of the ' Department, and representations have "been made to ihe shipping complies. j Tnere does not seem much hope, \v<\\- | ever, ot their agreeing- to a reduction I at present.
