LOCAL AND GENERAL.
A meeting of ratepayers to consider proposed loan of £3000 will be held on Friday evening at 8 o'clock. Dr Long, dentist, will next visit Helensville on August 23rd, instead ot the 16th inst. "We are informed "by the Chairman of the Town Board (Mr Jas McLeod) that the Marine Department has sanctioned the crossing of Awaroa creek with, the drainage pipes. The Minister for Railways (Hon W. H. Herries) has replied to the Helensville A. and P. Association's representations on the question of reconsidering his decisions in regard to Sunday Milk Train, to the effect that he will again deal with this matter. Tenders for a bush-falling contract are advertised in this issue. The following letter from a correspondent of the Liverpool Mercury will be read with interest just now :—" I am willing to risk my reputation as a public man if the worst case of smallpox cannot be cured in three days simply by cream of tartar. This is the sure remedy :—one ounc6of cream of tartar dissolved in boiling water, to be drunk, when cold, at short intervals. It can be taken at any time. It is known to liavo cured 100,000 cases without failure. I -have myself restored hundreds by this means. It never leaves a mark, never causes blindness, and always prevents tedious lingering. If people would only try ' it and report all cures to you, tou would require many columns if you gave the iv publicity. The cream of tarter remedy is mentioned in Dr. Chase's well-known medical work as boing most efficacious ia curing smallpox. It is stated that it was used with entire success in thousands of j cases in the American army." I The coming of Spring ! Not only the bright spring ilowers with their cheering influence, but the welcomo fruit trofi blossoms and the marked growth of new and tender shoots of herbage in the pastux-e lands are prominently signalling the near approach of spring-timo, Also there aro now numerous lambs in the meadows and gambolling on thft terraces, whilst on the dairy flats numbers of calves can be seen frisking about. The milk and cream supplies at the various stations are showing a rapid iv crease, an evidence that another dairying season will soon be in full svvino-. The lack of rainfall during the year, however, is still causing some uneasiness in farming- circles, as it is considered that the outlook during the coming summer wiil be somewhat serious unless there is a copious downpour in the meantime. From December last the total rainfall has only been about '20 inches in this district, and the usual source of supply in the dry months on farm lands — springs ond small creeks can scarcely be expected next summer unless there is a far heavier rainfall registered between now and the advent of summer weather.
