Kopironui Sand Drift.

In reference to the sand drift on Mr Baker's property near Woodhill, at Friday's County Council meeting the County Engineer (Mr Jackson) reported as follows :— " Kopironui Sand drift—The Committee appointed to deal with Mr Baker mot on the ground on the l.>th April and also in "the County Office on the 2nd inst. and it has been decided to make the following recommendation : (1) ghat the Council purchase from Mr B^ker, 3 acres and 30.3 perches to be set aside as a Filter bed/; (2) That the oxistiug drain be effectually blocked at once and diverted into the filter bed ; (3) That the ]and be fenced in a substantial manner forthwith; (4) That the above works be carried out by Mr Baker and the cost be borne, equally by the Council and Baker. Ci McLeod expressed disapproval of the agreement having been signed, as if the drains were not filled in the scheme would be a failure. It was understood that the drains were to be filled in and vegetation encouraged to grow. If only a small portion of the drains was filled in the first flood would again carry large quantities of sand into the creek. He had pointed out to Mr Baker that the place would eventually become a sand waste ; and he knew that Mr Baker was warned before the drains were dug as to what would happen. Ct was no use paying away £50 unless it would remedy matters, CrDye pointed out that there was nothing m the agreement to prevent the drams being filled in right to the creek. The agreement read that it must be an effectual blockage of the sand.
