SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The annual meetings of householders for tlie purpose of electing school committees for the ensuing year take place next Monday evening. We hope there will be good attendances at .the district schools, and thai rejirescntative"' committees will ■be elected.- ; In some -localitiesthere is far too much apathy in regard to educational affairs, the outcome of which cannot be for the future good of the children. • It is quite true that school committees have not a deal of power (we have heard it said that their only functions are to supervise sanitary affairs) , but that is p. position for which the committees' are chiefly to blame, as in many instance's" practically no objection has been made while.-'itae Kducation Hoards have steadily usurped; their privileges. Had the Provincial School Committees' organisations been a strong force years ago, there would be now little room to complain that committees had lost their powers. Those householders, therefore, who have a fair knowledge of educational .".-requirementsJ should not hesitate to offer their services to the electors in their respectivevdistricts. One important privilege the committees have is the "election "of nicihb'ers to the Education Board, audi.ty is the Boards that largclyyinftui-' once the arranging as well as the administering of a syllabus. Further,-' the committees, by united action through their provincial associations, Can make sue!i representations' to tlie Boards as to compel attention being given their grievances ; otherwise an appeal could be jniiclo ' direct to tho Education .Department. It is, therefore, of importance that strong and influential committees be elected so as to remove anomalies and prevent their remtroductioii, also help to bring about an educational system that few could cavil at. and incidentally g'.t better value for the million of money spent annually by this Department.'
