Farm Training tor Boys
A DISTRICT INSTITUTION SUGGESTED.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—ln the last report of the Secretary of Agriculture, he draws attention to the great need " for instititions where a practical training can be given to persons who propose to take up work to improve their acknowledge of one or more branches of fanning." He then goes on to state that about twenty of these places are needed. The idea of the Secretary is to have farms to suit local conditions so that our boys can be trained on the soil which they will afterwards work. Along with the manipulation of the soil, but under a different head will be the breeding of cattle, so that the pupil will learn how to use his land, and how to improve his stock. Now, Sir, I think all those in favour of one of these training farms in our district should use' their best efforts to get one established. That we need, and deserve one of these institutions, goes without saying, so lets up and after it ; we will get nothing without asking and working hard. If we do not get one it will be our own faults. Let everyone who has any influence write or talk about it to all those in authority, and above all let us remember not to be parochial but to pull together for the good of the district.
Hoping that this will be taken up by some abler pen than mine, or by the local branch of the Farmer's Union, if there is one. I am, etc. W. N. COUGHLAN. Kaukapakapa 9-4-13
