The Caucus put up a candidate and failed at th« first ballot. Tiis electors of the Labi our side were then faced with the al" ternatives of voting, victory to the enemy or giving- the machine a set back. They unhesitatingly decidad against the machine. Thus flfr Beeby wins against the outrageou B system which make representatives of the people the slaves of a faction. All ft£ oritlosare seeing insuperable difficulties for the Government as a consequence of this election. But it is probable that tho election is the turning point of their fortunes, after which the Parliamentary leader will be followed not placed under the heel of the caucus One strong- man beating the machine to powder. All the rest may do the same. The Blayney victory is therefore a notable win. It may mean the downfall of the " boss " system, and the return of the true sy.stein of party government with perfect organisation and personal responsibility. This is uuuortant because the American lesson is that the elimination of the second factor turns the " machine " into an engine of rascality corruption and oppression.
