The estimated mean population j of the Dominion (exclusive of Maoris and Cook and other Pacific Islands) on 31st December, 1912, was 1,114,987 persons. The number of Chinese on the same date was estimated at 2520, including 102 females. Excluding Maoris the population increased during the year by 27,139. To this increase, excess of births over deaths contributed 18,212, and excess of arrivals over departures 8927. The birthrate for the dominion last year was 26.48 per 1000 of mean population, and the death rate 8.95, as against 25.97 and 9.39 respectively in 1911.
