THE FATAL JOURNEY.
JOGGED BY BAD LUCK
"When the Terra Nova returned to New Zealand in April of last year without Captain' Scott, she brought back a most interesting narrative of the start of what proved to be.a fatal journey. T!he narrative covers a period pi ne; irly 1 2 months. It begins on January 3, 1912. At the la.tter date Captain Scott was 150 mih ss from the Pole, and was still proceeding. Captain S1 cott's story is a vivid narrative of her oic endeavour against un~ expected ad versity. Luck has been persistently against the explorer from the outset. In Fedruary, .1911, he had a mirac-alous escape from death. A few week s later he lost several of his ponies iv a b.reak-up of the ice. These animals throughout have not justified their adoption. Afterwards his dogs were stric ken witli a mysterious disease from which several died. Finally his motor sledges broke down and had to be abandoned. In the face of these and other handicaps the first start for the Pole had to be delayed until very late m the season. During t'a-e dash southwards continuous bad we lather was encount« ered, and in the p: issage of the terrible Beardmore glacier a full week was lost. From beginnh>ig to end the story was one of njuigaificent endeavour against continuous and extr.ioidinary , adversity of ciixjumstances.
