Messrs Alfred Buckiand and Sons, report:— At our weekly "Westfield fat stock market on Wednesday, January 22, our beef pens contained 369 head of fat cattle, the quality of which was good. There was a sluggish demand, with a further drop in prices. Choice ox sold to Ll ss, prime Ll 3s to Ll 4s; , cows and heifers, 19s to Ll 3s ; steers ! ranged in price from L 6to Lll 15s ; cows and heifers, L 4to L 8 17s 6d. Fat and young calves sold at late rates. Kunners, L 3 10s to L 4 8s; choice suckers, L 2 2s to L 3, lighter sorts Ll 10 to L 2, light 18s to Ll Bs=, small and fresh dropped 3s to 15s (82 sold). There was a full yarding of choice quality mutton, which sold without alteration from last report. Extraheavy wethers 19s 9d to Ll os, heavy wethers 17s 6d to 19s, medium to heavy 16s to 17s 6d, light and unfinished 15s to 16s ; best ewes 15s to 16s 9d, good 13s to 14s 6d, others 8s jto 12s 6d (1855 sold. Lambs came forward in record numbers, and except in cases of extra well done prices were fully 2s head lower. This is accounted for by freezing buyers not operating. Extra well finished made from 15s to 17s 3d, good 12s to 14s, others 10s 6d 'to Ps 9d, unfinished and small 6s to 9s 9d. The pig pens were moderately filled. Choice porkers improved in price. Other classes sold, at lat9 quotations. Baconers, L 2 8s to L 2 16s ; large porkers, L 2 3s to L27s ; lighter, Ll 13s to L2ls ; slips, Ll Os 6d to Ll 3s ; weaners, 12s to 14s (109 sold). THE N.Z. Veal calves were yarded in average supply, and sold at late rates. Medium-weight vealers sold at from L 2to L 2 10s, lighter Ll to Ll 15s, smaller and fresh dropped 3s to 18s. Sheep were yarded in scarcely full numbers, and sold at late rates. Best wethers sold at from 18s 3d to 20, other 13s 6d to )7s9d; heavy ewes 16s to 17s 9d, others 9s 6d to 15s.
