THE DOMINION AT HOME.
THE Government here has declared that it is not necessary to be represented at the forthcoming 'exhibition at Ghent. Now this exhibition is the second of a ser" ies of which the first was at Rou-baix--the great French Wool centre —last year. The Government of the day very nearly missed that chance but they decided just in time and the thing came off, with the result that the Dominion made a magnificent impression on all continents with its exhibits of wool and mutton, and dairy produce. Since then it is certain that the chances for the opening of the continental' markets to the meats and dairy produce of this country have improved. It is true that they are closed now and that there is an immense interest arrayed against their being opened to the foreigner. But the people of the various continental countries are growing tired of the high prices which are getting more and more prohibitive and the public are getting more and more meat hungry. The prejudice of ignorance is the only thing that helps the selfishness of the agricultural magnates of Europe in their barrage tactics. But the repeated appearance of the meat and the other produce in first class condition at exhibitions of such things becomes the imperative
thing for the Interests of this Dominion. It is bad economy therefore to refuse to be represented at these exhibitions. The producing interests of the Dominion call upon the Government to remember the duty the duty it owes to them and to prosterity.
