BIBLE IN STATE SCHOOLS.

TO THE EDITOK

Sir, —I was sorry to learn that a branch of the " Bible in State Schools League " had been formed at Helensvile. What a pity that well-meaning people should attempt to do so good a work by such unscriptural methods. To burden the State with the duties of the Church is in direct Opposition to the teachings of Christ, who says : " Render unto Caesar the things that are Ceasar's, andjunto God the things that are God's." The business of the State is to protect everyone in the exercise of his religious belief or no belief, so long as one person does not interfere with the rights of others. God has given full instructions to [parents as to their religious duties towards their children, and if some parents fail to do their part, or some children have no parents, the church and every Christian is commanded to look after them. It is said that Bible in schools works alright in some places. So might a child play with fire, for a time, without hurt, but its life would be in danger every moment. It is claimed by those favouring Bible in Schools, that it would bring about a better observance of the Sabbath. This same people are asking for stricter laws, forbidding numerous forms of pleasure, recreation, and work on Sunday. Nearly two thousand years ago this people professing to be followers of Jesus, were shown to the disciple John, as a people who would gain control of earthly governments, and use that power to oppress the people of God, compelling all to bow to their ideals in religious matters even planning to inflict death upon all offenders. Rev. 13. Let us be wise and heed the solemn warning of Rev. 14 : 9-12. Let us accept the gracious invitation and blessings offered in Chapter 1:3. I am, etc., G. J.
