IHE STATE OF PRICES It is satisfactoiy that the rise in wool, the firmness of other prices, and the opening pospects of increased markets of consumption have come about the same time as the assured success of the most recent attempt at co-oper-. ative buying by the Farmers' Union of tiie North Island. Evidently the education of the farmer is proceeding on_ terms level with the progress of his prices Wool stands first and nothing is n-ore pleasing than the substantial pence all round—that was the Wellington as agreed by all the brokers. But the Christchurch verdict brought the rise down to one halfpenny per lb. Now as there are 160 million pounds of export the latter figures spell out one million sterling for the pockets of the farmer who looks at sheep. At the same time aide by side with the* news that the Prusian " Youker" refuses to allow of any tariff modifications or of any abatement of the exclusive regulations, against the importations of meats, come the quotations of dog's flesh in the markets of the Fatherland. From which the conclusion is obvious, that there is a very i'avouiourable handicap in the situation in favour of the ©verseas article. Now with such a handicap there ought to b<» no difficulty in getting up and maintaining a tremendous crusade for the forcing of the barriers against wholesome food for seifrespectiag nations to eat instead of the Chinese abomination of men " dog food." Best of them is the opening of thp horizon for public mollo3', The government will be able to get what money tliey want for works and the rest. Aye the rest ! Last session the stress of the money market was used for the purpose of justifying the stoppage of borrowing for the Advances Department and similar departments of beneficial state work, But with booming trade and stoppage of the Balkans War it is a case for reversing the engine, back towards the country of cheap interest and rapid development.
