MAUNGATUROTO
(Own Coiirespo^deiol.) A hookey match on skates was played on Tuesday sth last, in the hall, between local tsams and Paparoa. The local teams won two games out of three, the scores being 5—4, 3—2, and 7—nil. During the evening a potato race for gents and one for ladies were held. In the gents race, Mr G. Alien took the prize, and Miss Parsons won tho ladies prize. For the-best hockey players Miss N. Finlayson and Mr Guy Cullen were the winners.
«^n Saturday, 9th ms^, the East Tennis Club opened their courts at the Factory ground. The afternoon's play was marred by light rain, which fell nearly all the time. Afternoon tea was dispensed during the afternoon by the ladies in the Show shed, and on the whole a pleasant day was spent in spite of the rain.
Railway construction work is at a standstill here at present. Nearly all the men were discharged last week. There is only the big tunnel working at present, and one gang on a cutting and filling between the two tunnela. Excepting these men, there are none on this side of the river. Report states that it will probably be some two years or more before work is again commenced. -We cannot now expect to see the train running here for many years to come. The bridge at the Otamatea is well in hand and should be finished in a very few months. With this completed, it is expected to have the rails laid to the Bickerstaffe station. As to when the rails will be laid to the Maungaturoto station, it is hard to say. It may be several yea*s
