WAITEMATA COUNTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the Waitemata County Council was held last Friday, at the offices, Swanson Street. Present: Messrs A. Cochrane (chairman), M. Lang, W, McChattie, F. Poynton, H. Day, J. Greenwood, V. Kerr-Taylor, J. McLeod, and F. Dye.

By-laws—Building by-laws were passed for the ridings of Waikumete, Waipareora, and Takapuna. Another by-law was adopted to deal with traffic by traction engines over the principal roads within the borough, Mr Griffin waited upon the Council to enter his protest, but the Chaiiman explained it was not intended to apply to chaffing machines being drawn from farm to farm. The object was to deal with special traffic, such as the dragging of timber by traction engines.

The Chairman said the Counsil had suffered a great loss in the death of Mr. John Adlington, of Waimauku, one of the Council's best working man, Several councillors spoke in high terms of the deceased, and a vote of condolence was passed byvthe Council. The Helensville swing bridge and Ohirangi bridge are both held up, tho fomier ponding receipt of a reply to a proposal made to the Helensville Town Board twelve months ago, and the latter awaiting a reply from tho Public Works Department, Wellington, to supply a section of the grider required.

Tenders were received as follows

Kaun Gum Land. —The Lands Department, which is taking possession of worked-out kauii gum land 1,071 acres in extent, at Lucas' Creek, asked tins formal signature of the Council transferring the property to them.

Some very plain talk took place, on the question of councillors going to Wellington without authority from and that body, acting as if they were authoi ised deputations.

Mr J ; McLeod entered a strong protost against tho remarks Councillor V, Kerr'laylor was reported to have made at last meeting. lie said Mr Taylor had complained that, members were in the habit, of going to Wellington and representing themselves as being deputations from the C'ouneil. Mr McLeod expressed surprise that tho complaint had been raised in his absence, and no question asked at the previous meeting, when he was present. Mr Taylor said he had not referred to Mr McLeod at all, but objected generally to councillors going to Wellington on council matters unless authorised to do so
