LITERARY AND SOCIAL CLUB (Own Correspondent.)
A very pleasant evening was spent in the Foresters' Hall. Maungaturoto. on Wednesday evening last, iv connection with th 9 Literary and Social Club. The evening was " Ladies Surprise " night aud a very enjoy able programme was supplied by the ladies of the Club. There was a good attendance about forty members and their friends being present. Several competitions were held for gentlemen only. In the hat trimming Mr Boag carried off tho first prize, and Mr W. Dell secured the booby prize. The new fashions set up by some of the miJ liners are hardly likely to remain long. In the spelling competition Mr K. Dell won the prize, and in the photo recognition Mr Gr. Williams proved the -winner. Several gentlemen took part in a charade entitled " Champayne," which was acted in a very amusing manner. About 10 p.m. supper was handed round bj the ladies, and after a fewmore games everyone left having spent a very pleasant eveningl, ROADS. The roads in and around the dis» trict are a sight to see just now. From Maungaturoto to Railhead it is a sea of mud, in many places right up to the axles of the coach. The road to Whakapirau is almost as bad. For about two miles of the way it is all but a bog. It is over that part that the public -Works Department are doing a lot of hauling, no less than eight drays constantly going over it. On Monday last the coach running on that part got bogged to the axles and had to be dug out. Wo all live in hopes of seeing the express running right through to the station soon. The local dairy company expect to start operations on September Ist, a good season is expected. FACTORY SUPPLIERS' ANNUAL MEETING. The suppliers of the Maungaturoto Dairy Factory held their annual meeting iv the Public Hall, on Thursday, August loth when in spite of the in. clement weather a large gatheriug of Directors and suppliers met to discuss the Roport and Balance Sheet of the year's output. In the evening, bein°joined by their families and friends', they sat down to a susptuous banquet, which was catered in first class style by Mr Allen, baker, of Maungaturoto. After the banquet a most enjoyable concert and drnce was held, Sterns being■ gvuen by Misses Madge Cullen, andAl Mooney, and Messrs Anderson Allen and Fergusonr. Misses Stewirt aud _ Hyland ably played the aceompa laments.
