li Ratepayers in Maretahi Riding in the County of Waitemata had their valuations very substantially increased by the Government Valuer recently, and as the Council had some time ago decided to levy rates totalling six farthing in the pound, it was found when the valuation roll was received from the Government that the impost would be heavy. However (Mr James MoLeod^ the Member for the Riding brought the matter before the Council, and had the levy reduced—the general rate by one farthing and the loan xate by ono half of the original levy. The books and rate demands had been ■ printed some time since and through an oversight the rate notices ay ere not amended io the lesser amount. As a misconception had arisen as to the amount to be collected, it should be understood that the lesser amount and the rates shewn on the rate demands is the correct levy."— Advt.
