THE Kaipara Advertiser. AND WAITEMATA CHRONICLE. WEDNESDAY, JUNE 19, 1912. THE FOUR MILLION LOAN.

The Financial New does not love New Zealand, and the Standard is an impartial paper. Both unite in announcing the issue of the four million loan as imminent at a price superior to that at which the much discussed five millions came out last year. One per cent for underwriting against two, and a minium of £99 against one of £98, make between them decidedly good contract. It only remains to regret the allusion made by Sir Joseph Ward at the Wellington rehabilitation to this loan as having been withdrawn out of compliment to the wishes of the Opposition which had been wrangling against all loans, and insisting on putting in the plug. It appears now that the loan was not proceeded with at the beginning of the year because the market was not too favourable. It is now apparently all that could be desired and we shall get our money less only one per cent. Apparently it is going to be a fairly good loan. Much was said last year about the awful fate of the underwriters left with most of the loan on their hands for the moment. Vain was it to urge that these people knew what they were about and needed no pity therefore. The critics of scorn danced on the plea with much laughter. But here we have underwriters undeterred by the fate oj those who were tempted by a fee of two per cent on five millions, readily taking the risk for one on a loan of four millions. Let us be thankful for our good credit, and turn the hoss of ridicule on all politicians misguided enough to try and make capital out of it.
