An Opposition caucus was held in Wellington last week. Rumours of coalition were denied, and a plain of campaign for the ensuing session was adopted. Mr Massey will piobatly take the first opportunity of moving another vote of no-confidence in the Government.
The Federation of Labour, at its conference in Wellington, provided for candidates representing the Federation being " run " at the general elections. Candidates must bo finan^ cial members of the Federation and wage workers. A new constitution adopted provides, among other things, for abolition of ths wage system.

Replying to a Clutha Valley deputa* tiou, the Hon. T. Mackenzie (Prime Minister) said the time had come for Parliament to consider wehther or not a separate borrowing scheme should be adopted for developing the country. He was in favour of a policy to construct light lmes as feeders to main railways. He was going to submit to Cabniet a proposal dealing with the number of branch lines required, and make their construction part of the Government's policy, and thus raise. Parliament being willing money for the purpose.
Twenty-six years ago the disastrous Tarawera erubtion occurred. The catastrophe stands alone in the history of New Zealand in the extent of the devastation it. caused. Wholly unexpectedly, the volcano announced its activity only by a preliminary succession of earthquakes, and then commenced to belch lava and ashes. Lake Rotoniahana which has since restored itself, was emptied by the southern, bank being blown away; and the famous pink and white terraces were destroyed. The Maori villages of Wairoa and Te Ariki were wiped out, and the lives of six Europeans and 95 natives were lost*
