LOCAL GOVERNMENT
The Conference) lias not left the Local G tverntnent bill a feather to fly with. On Monday it was a great bird sailing- majestic under the lirmainent of tho political heavnu. On Thursday it -was stiuck by four shots emanating from foui eonimittees of the conference and fell to the ground -without even a thud of regret. Tho first thing dear is that the Government was veiy wise to assemble that conference which has extricated it from the toils of an agitation which turns out to have boen without agitators. No oue wh© know anything about local government wanted the Bill or any bill except a small 0110 enabling {hi; minor friction of tho local government system 111 force to be smoothed out, entailing too much friction in tho process. These have been pointed out in such a way as to leave no further difficulty or doubt on tho roform coming ami sure to be carried. As for tho assured finance that seems to be as far off ac ever and will have to remain where it is : coverod by tho existing system of subsidies. Jjad perhaps""? But better to endure than the wholesale of ali things, education, harbour boards, hospital boards, drainage boards, Town Councils, Count)' Couus oils and everything elss as provided by the dead bill mow safely buried out of sight.
